What Makes Rhythm of Healing a Great Place to Receive Massage?

Rhythm of Healing is unique because of our focus on patient education, deep relaxation, and assessment. Each treatment will include assessment to determine the precise compensation patterns of that are causing less than optimal functioning. This assessment relies on methods developed by chiropractors, osteopaths, physical therapists and personal trainers. In this assessment the quality and texture of soft tissues, the range of motion of joints, and the appearance of the areas will be assessed to determine the most likely cause of the dysfunction. When correct assessment is accomplished then a treatment program is developed. Each treatment is focused on the clients specific concerns and clients can anticipate a reduction in pain and improvement of mood.

The benefits of massage therapy are well documented and respected by the medical community. It has been shown that regular bodywork can benefit anyone producing lasting health and improved moods. Depending on the technique being used you can expect to  experience enhanced natural immunity and vitality. Here is a brief list of research studies that support the use of massage for common joint and spine complaints.
  • Knee Pain (Perlman AI, Ali A, Njike VY, et al. Massage therapy for osteoarthritis of the knee: a randomized dose-finding trial. PLoS One. 2012; 7(2):e30248.)
  • Inflammation (J. D. Crane,et al. Massage Therapy Attenuates Inflammatory Signaling After Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage. Sci. Transl. Med. 4, 119ra13 (2012).)
  • Chronic Low Back Pain (Cherkin DC, et al. A comparison of the effects of 2 types of massage and usual care on chronic low back pain: a randomized, controlled trial.Ann Intern Med. 2011 Jul 5;155(1):1-9.)
  • Fibromyalgia (Castro-Sánchez, A.M., et al (2011). Benefits of massage-myofascial release therapy on pain, anxiety, quality of sleep, depression, and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2011:561753)

Therapeutic massage has many interpretations. I primarily use the word to mean that you have pain or an injury and yoiu want a massage that directly addresses this. This definition can include orthopedic massage, sports massage, and deep tissue massage as all of these modalities have been developed in response to pain or injury.

I have been trained in Active Release Technique, Advanced Muscle Reconditioning, Lowen Systems, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue, and many more. All of these types of therapeutic massage use a strong education in anatomy and physiology in order to guide their treatment approaches. Since 2008 I have been refining my understanding of all of these different methods and developing a style that allows me to personalize and customize my treatments to the individual.

I truly believe that this customization and personalization is what makes a massage "therapeutic." No presentation of a condition is the same and so understanding the unique needs of the individual is primary.

Professional and amateur athletes know the benefits of massage. Whether it is before or after an event most athletes have experienced how manual therapy like massage can help them recover from injury and improve their performance. I try and stay on top of the research and why that is the case. So far it appears that massage helps the receptors in the skin communicate better with the brain and this improved communication reduces the static coming from the body and allows for improved performance. I will continue to stay up to date with the latest in sports massage. Not just the modalities that are most often used in sports, but also the science that supports the use of these modalities.

These terms are considered interchangeable and they refer to a massage treatment that is focused on the alleviation of symptoms. If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident or have a worker's comp claim, your insurance will cover our massage therapy treatments. This is evidence of massages ability to help with chronic and acute pain. Some of people we treat report having headaches, whiplash, with back pain, TMJ dysfunction, fibromyalgia, and sciatica. Massage has a range of treatments that be beneficial.
