Character: The Remover of Disease

Names after Lord Shiva this herb is considered to be the best herb for the digestive system and the lungs. It contains anthraquinones such as sennoside A which have a powerful effect on regulating elimination depending on the dosage used. It also clears toxins from the small intestines and treats inflamed mucus membranes and gas. It is beneficial in the treatment of asthma as it strengthens the lungs.

Guna: heavy and dry

Rasa: all except salty

Vipaka: sweet

Virya: cwarm

Prabhava:  Stalls telomere damage

Main Action:  Nutritive tonic, rejuvenative, laxative, nervine, expectorant, worm remover.

Action on Doshas: Pacifies all three doshas.

Action on Dhatus: Strengthens all tissues

Description:  As a wash Haritaki is often used to treat all types of eye conditions including conjunctivitis. In order to make an eye was boil 1 teaspoon of Haritaki powder in 8 ounces of water for 10 minutes. Strain through a coffee filter and let cool and then put in an eye cup and wash the eyes 3-5 times a day. The main healing effect of Haritaki comes from it’s astringency and so it can help to reduce inflammation anywhere in the body and to strengthen the cell membranes. fruit is touted to rebuild and maintain new tissues and cleanse the mouth and strengthen teeth; nourish bones; and increases the growth of hair and nails; improve eyesight; stop bleeding gums; relieve inflammation of the colon (Yoga of Herbs, 158). 

Main Uses:

1.      Inflammatory conditions of the heart, liver, kidney, eyes

2.      Constipation

3.      All urinary diseases

4.      Old age

Precautions: In excess can produce ama.  Do not use in case of acute diarrhea.
