Pitta-Kapha is intense, moist, solid, sharp, hot, spreading and liquid. The main qualities of Pitta-Kapha are hot, heavy and moist. So, having a Pitta –Kapha predominant Prakriti means that you will see these qualities in your mental, emotional and physical make up. You may find them reflected in your strengths and weaknesses.

  • Emotional, passionate, argumentative, aggressive, inspiring and hot-headed
  • The sharp quality may manifest as strong opinions, convictions and beliefs.
  • You also have an incredible ability to recall information and facts, which will help you win many arguments.
  • Having both hot and cold may make you more emotional than the other dosha’s. Your emotions may fluctuate wildly. Remember that this too shall pass and cultivate patience.

  • The oily quality allows for soft skin and hair, but it can lead to acne or a slimy quality in your relationships with others.
  • “Hotness” can manifest as a warm, rosy complexion, warm body temperature, strong metabolism and appetite or, in excess, as ulcers, heartburn or a hot temper.
  • The liquid quality may manifest as excess sweating; when it’s combined with the hot quality it can present as excess stomach acid.

Decreasing or Balancing Pitta-Kapha
A basic tenet of Ayurveda is “like increases like.” Therefore, increasing the inherent qualities of Pitta-Kapha will increase Pitta-Kapha in your body, mind and spirit. For example, because Pitta-Kapha is inherently hot and moist – hot humid weather, spicy greasy foods, the hot rainy seasons and even emotions can increase Pitta-Kapha

Tastes That Increase and Decrease Pitta-Kapha Along with the main qualities of Pitta-Kapha, it is also helpful to know those tastes that increase Pitta-Kapha and those that decrease Pitta-Kapha. Sour and salty tastes increase Pitta-Kapha, by increasing its hot, heavy, moist quality. An example of the sour taste is: pickles and of salty: salt. Bitter and astringent tastes will decrease Pitta-Kapha by providing the opposite qualities. An example of naturally bitter and astringent (which are often coupled) tastes are many leafy greens and herbs.

 Opposites as Medicine For example,
if your dominant dosha is Pitta-Kapha, you may be passionate, emotional, inspiring and argumentative due to the hot and moist qualities of Pitta-Kapha. However, this very quality that is inherent in Pitta-Kapha may eventually become aggravated and create mental or emotional “burn out.” Medicines are substances, which decrease the excess dosha by providing the opposite qualities to it. For example, if excess power struggles have resulted in “burn out,” it is time to increase your exposure to a comfortable environment and non competitive activities can be medicine. If you have too much heat, coolness can be the medicine.

Qualities opposite to Pitta-Kapha are those that are dry, cool and light. It is therefore best for Pitta-Kapha individuals to seek out physical and emotional environments, routines, and foods that possess these opposite qualities.

Herbal Support for a Pitta-Kapha Constitution
Using herbs to manage your constitution compliments the changes you make in your diet and lifestyle. Bacopa, Cardamom, and Manjishta are three of the primary herbs used to remove excess pitta-kapha from the body and maintain balance. These herbs can be found by combining Mental Clarity with Blood Cleanse herbal tablets.

Opposites in Climate and Lifestyle as Medicine
The ideal environment for a Pitta-Kapha individual is cool and dry. They do best with cold weather sports like skiing and ice-skating or early morning exercise. Slightly bitter and astringent smells, like the essential oils of jasmine and chamomile; melodic music and humor are also good “medicines” for Pitta-Kapha. To protect the skin from pollutants in our water and from excess sun an oil massage 3-5 times a week with coconut oil will support you to feel nourished and supported so that you don’t feel the need to do it all alone. You may need to learn to surrender and “go with the flow” rather than using your will to force the flow.

On a more personal scale we may allow our personal ambition to drive us into power struggles that undermine our relationships. One of the best medicines for Pitta-Kapha is finding balance in all the areas of their life. If you can develop a set of principles that inform your decisions instead of being led by money, family, or work then a divine power or natural force can work through your strength and hard work for the benefit of all mankind.
